It will be recollected

that during the last two

I

years,

C

have urged in a series of despateles the resessity of improving the~~~

defences by sea and land of this important Naval and Military ___ Station and great Mart of Commerce. The works that Her Majesty's Government have recently sanctioned, -when completed, and armed with -heavy guns, and the re-inforcements

lately

lately added to and proposed for the garrison and the squadron, should, in the opinion of high professional authorities, be sufficient to repel any attack likely to be brought against this Colony. But it has been

urged by the Chamber of Commerce, and in other influential quarters, — that, in particular, more torpedo -- boats should be provided by the Imperial Government; and

Admiral Sir William Dowell

coneurs with me that it would

be well that four other torped --

boats
